Elias Stoumbos

February 25, 1934 — April 16, 2022

Elias Louis Stoumbos, born in Krokelion, Doridos, Greece, February 25, 1934, passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Comforter, Saturday, April 16, 2022.  Louis struggled with neurological issues including hearing loss and dementia. These conditions were exacerbated by a fall in late February, the day after celebrating his 88th Birthday with his wife, family, and friends at this home in Ocoee, Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theano ‘Tina’, their daughter Maria and her partner, Greetje Kip, their son Zachary, their daughter-in-law, Andrea, and their grandchildren, Steven and Andrew.  Louis leaves behind his older sister, Anna Demopoulos, in Charlotte, North Carolina, along with an extensive extended family, three generations wide, residing all over the world.

Louis has been a member of the North American Greek Orthodox Church since he emigrated from Greece to Canada in 1951.  At the age of 17, traveling by ship from his homeland, he began his new life working in restaurants and clubs moving west across Canada, then owning and running restaurants in Port Arthur and later, in Winnipeg.  He travelled back to Greece and married in 1961.

Relocating to Florida in 1972, he joined the Greek community of St. Demetrios in Daytona Beach, where he raised his family as a Realtor, Real Estate Broker, and Developer.  He retired and moved to the Orlando area in 2002, where his son had previously relocated to open his own law practice and to raise his family.  Upon their relocation, Louis and Tina joined Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Maitland.

To know Louis, you’d say that he was fair, honest, sagacious, and had an empathetic understanding of people and the world. He was progressive in his ideas about the world, unlike many of his generation.  He was curious with an inquiring mind.  He was devoted to his family and community and was available to help in any way he could.  His sense of service was shared by his wife as they modeled generosity and care for others to their children who took up their mantle of service and community.

Louis was an avid reader on many subjects, self taught, as they say, but he really loved watching Wild Life related documentaries and studying books compiled by Monastic devotees of Christian Saints and their stories of miracles.  His Holy of Holies was the St. Raphael Monastery on the Greek island of Lesvos, devoted to the veneration of St. Rafael, St. Nicholao, his disciple, and St. Eirini.  Louis was fascinated by the natural world and the spiritual world.  He spent most of his time in his final years studying and exploring both.  Finally, we can’t miss sharing how much he loved to dance, all types of dancing, especially memorable, the Greek Zembekiko.  He was so light on his feet and loved to dance almost as much as he loved his Aghapi’s cooking.  Louis was one of the original Foodies.

The last of the Patriarchs of his large extended family, may he Rest in Peace.  May his memory be eternal.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the nurses, care givers and staff at Advent Health Hospice, in-patient unit in Altamonte Springs, Florida.  We experienced the most reverent and compassionate care of our loved one as we were guided through his final days.   ComforCare Home Care of Longwood and their committed care givers were essential to us during these last weeks.  All Heroes and Angels in this world.  Forever Grateful.
