Mercedes Rasuk-Risk

December 9, 1925 — October 27, 2022

Mercedes Lourdes Rasuk-Risk passed peacefully at home with her family by her side on the morning of October 27, 2022. She was born in the Dominican Republic in December 1925. She married Fernando Lopez in 1946 and they had five children. The couple later divorced and the 3 older Children came to live with their father in the U.S.. In 1965 Mercedes came to the U.S.. and reunited with her children. She lived in Brooklyn, as well as other towns in New York. She proudly became an American citizen in April of 2000. Later in life, she moved to Orlando, Florida with her daughter, Indiana and lived there many wonderful years. In March of this year, she moved in with her son Fernando and his wife Josephine in Groveland, Florida and from there, she went to heaven.

She is survived by her five children, Fernando Lopez III (Josephine) of Groveland, FL, Mercedes Springer of Southbury, CT, Rose Tamburo (Raymond) of New Rochelle, N.Y., Indiana Iebba of Orlando, FL, and George Lopez (Cynthia) of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She had many nieces and nephews who loved her very much. She was preceded by her parents, America Jorge-Risk and Abraham Rasuk; eleven siblings; grandson, Jason, great-grandson, Dean, and two sons-in-law, Gene Springer and Pat Iebba. Her joy in life was to see her family grow and be close to them. She was the central matriarch of her family and a pillar of strength we all leaned on. She's lovingly remembered for her love of cooking, especially the rice & beans and spanish steaks that always brought the family together for large gatherings. It was always a special treat to arrive at her home, knowing from the aroma that came from the kitchen, what meal they were going to enjoy that day. In her 90s, she still enjoyed putting on her make up and getting dressed, just to sit in the living room and watch the world go by. She enjoyed cooking, scratching lotto tickets, Spanish soap operas and smoking Marlboro cigarettes. She battled with breast cancer, open heart surgery and lung cancer in her 80s and 90s. She was an unconquerable spirit of positivity and strength, a trait she leaves to all her decendants.

There will be a celebration of her life at Christ Church Greenwich, 254 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut 06830, on December 4, 2022 at 11:15 a.m. in the Memorial Garden.
